Catamaran Charter in Mallorca
The Balearic Islands are often dubbed the "islands of eternal spring," a definition that fits like a glove. Here we focus on the main island Mallorca and its little sister Menorca, while reserving a separate article for Ibiza and Formentera.
In the span of your catamaran vacations in the Balearics you will discover an impressive variety of scenery, from the architectural wonders of Palma to the dream beach of Es Trenc. Given Majorca's considerable size, we propose two itineraries: one to the marinas and coves that dot the east coast and the other wilder to discover the northern part of the island.
On the other hand, those seeking more exclusive tourism will find their ideal destination in Menorca, the island of calm that will know how to enrapture you with its crystal-clear sea.
Palma de Mallorca and south coast
Your catamaran cruise in Mallorca begins at from its capital city, Palma de Mallorca, a maze of alleyways in which to get lost among the dozens of restaurants and nightclubs. In the heart of the city you will admire the iconic Cathedral of Seu, a 13th-century Gothic masterpiece overlooking the large marina and the Paseo Maritimo.
The coastline near Palma is full of enchanting corners. Among all of them Es Trencstands out. It's a stunning beach with golden sand over two kilometers long, ideal for those who like to walk barefoot on the shoreline. Behind the dunes of this spectacular beach stands the historic complex of the Salt Pans of S'Avall, an ecosystem rich in flora and fauna where salt has been harvested by hand using traditional methods for hundreds of years.
After bathing in Es Trenc we will head south to the island of Cabrera, declared a nature park since 1999, where access is limited to very few people per day. We will spend the day trekking on the many trails surrounded by Mediterranean scrub, and spend an unforgettable night moored at the buoy in a true piece of paradise.
East coast of Mallorca
Surpassing the Cap Salines lighthouse, we'll sail along the east side of the island noticing a sudden change of scenery: the coast is much higher and rocky, and hides many coves alternating with picturesque villages. A typical example is Cala Mondragò, in which the sandy beach is enclosed between two cliffs and pine forest, in an intimate and relaxing setting.
This coast is dotted by many small towns where you can spend an idle summer evening. In Cala d'Or a lively nightlife awaits you among bars and discos, while Portocolom will welcome in our catamaran with its quiet little harbor with traditional fishing boats and colorful little houses by the sea. In the village of Portocristo you will discover a unique spectacle at the Dragon Caverns, which develop underground among thousands of stalactites and an immense underground lake, in a path over a kilometer long.
Continuing north, an unspoiled stretch of coastline awaits us, devoid of equipped beaches and buildings. We will anchor the catamaran in the beautiful and deserted Cala Magraner accessible from the ground only by a winding path, and to Cala Varques under a spectacular natural arch carved into the cliff.
North coast of Mallorca
The northern coast lives in the shadow of the Sierra de Tramontana, an imposing mountain range rich in forests and vineyards. It is undoubtedly the most fascinating part of the island, less developed from a tourist point of view but capable of providing breathtaking sights. To the northeast we can admire the spectacular lighthouse of Cap de Formentor, overlooking the cliff hundreds of meters high. Immediately below we will take a refreshing swim at Cala Figuera, surrounded by postcard-perfect scenery.
Continuing our tour of Majorca by catamaran we will land at Sa Calobra, in a setting that looks like something out of Jurassic Park. Over the millennia, the Pareis stream has carved a very long canyon (part of which is walkable), ending in a white beach enclosed by two vertical walls.
Last we will glimpse the island of Dragonera, an uninhabited natural paradise named for its silhouette resembling a mythological monster. We will spend the day bathing and relaxing before returning to Palma de Mallorca.
Menorca by Catamaran
Menorca has an opposite character to its big sister; it is the ideal retreat for those seeking calm and escape from the hectic pace. The main port of call for our catamaran is Port Mahon which is built around the longest natural harbor in the Mediterranean. Its historic center is a gem with colonial-style buildings, filled with markets and local craft stores.
The other major settlement is Ciutadella, a small village protected by ancient walls where you can breathe in all the island's past. Finally, you cannot miss an aperitif at the Cova d'en Xoroi in the resort of Cala en Porter: the venue is set inside a spectacular natural cavity with numerous terraces overlooking the sea, and features music until late at night.
Along our catamaran vacation in Menorca we will be spoiled for choice among more than 80 coves, one more beautiful than the other. In this article it's impossible to make a comprehensive list of them, we only mention Cala Turqueta, whose very name comes from the turquoise-colored water, Cala Macarelleta, a nudist's paradise, and the world-famous Cala Galdana with its endless beach of fine sand.
