"Ponza is grumpy and beautiful. Shy, wary and never predictable. Among prickly pears, bougainvillea and bursts of broom, I lose myself in the beauty of its sunsets and find on earth my paradise."
Catamaran charter in the Pontine Islands
Renting a catamaran in Ponza is by far the best way to fully enjoy the dozens of coves scattered around the island.
The extreme proximity and beauty of each anchorage make it an ideal destination for all lovers of swimming and unspoiled natural scenery. In addition, the unique crescent shape of the island allows for shelter in all wind conditions, making it a particularly safe destination.
The ideal starting port is the marina of Nettuno on the Latium coast. The marina is charming and equipped with all amenities, easily accessible from Rome and a few miles of sailing from Ponza and Palmarola.
Ponza by catamaran
The island's main town is perched on the small harbor (1), full of restaurants and lively clubs in every season. Immediately north of the town we anchor the catamaran in the sandy bottoms of the Frontone bay, the most popular beach on the island. Continuing along the eastern side stands out. Arch Cove (2), in which towers the imposing holed stacks that give it its name.
Surpassing the old lighthouse on the west side opens up the world-famous Chiaia di Luna Bay (3), which offers dreamy sunsets over a white cliff overlooking the sea. A little further north we anchor the catamaran under the wild Faraglioni of Lucia Rosa: these formations are named after the tragic legend of a young girl who threw herself off the cliff after her family prevented her from crowning her love with a peer. Finally, we'll bathe in Feola Cove (4), which is home to beautiful natural pools with crystal clear water.
A few miles further west stands the island of Palmarola, totally uninhabited except for Villa Fendi and characteristic cave-houses still used by some Ponzese in summer. Brigantine Cove (5) is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular anchorages in Italy, with the very high white cliffs contrasting with the turquoise water. In the northern part we stpo the catamaran under The Cathedral (6), so called because of the peculiar shapes of the rocks that resemble Gothic spires, a breathtaking scenery. We can spend the night at anchor in the Harbor Cove and dine with your feet in the sand in front of a breathtaking sunset at O' Francese, the only restaurant on the island.
Zannone and Ventotene
The other two islands in the archipelago are Zannone (7), home of the lonely lighthouse and an abandoned mansion, for a bath away from civilization, and Ventotene, where we will moor our sailboat in the incredible Roman harbor carved out of the tuff, still a true masterpiece of engineering. Here we will discover an island with a placid character, in which the echoes of history offer a refuge from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
If time permits, your pontine catamaran vacation can go further south to the Flegree Islands that dot the Bay of Naples. In the bustling Ischia we'll drop the anchor of the sailboat right next to the Aragonese Castle, a unique setting in the world. By contrast in the tranquil Procida you can visit the village of Corricella, one of Italy's most beautiful villages with an amphitheater of pastel-hued cottages.
The famous Capri would deserve a vacation all to itself, such is the beauty that surrounds it. We will stop in Little Marina right under the Faraglioni, a symbol of this magnificent island, and a visit to the Blue Cave and its plays of light annot be missed. If you are interested in the mundane, you can enjoy an aperitif in the Piazzetta, the real beating heart of the island.
